Do You Remember Me?

Wilton and Barry

Ever since hearing Jesus Christ Superstar in 1993 I've wanted to do a Rock Opera.  My first attempt didn't work out and I ended up using the musical material for The Butterfly Plague.  Years later, I tried again and realized that my issue was the lyric writing. I didn't think my own style of obscure overly dramatic moody lyrics were suitable. So I put an ad online and found Barry Brown. After an afternoon of discussion he showed me a few titles and ideas. One was “Rabbit Proof Fence”. I thought it was a weird and quirky title and Barry mentioned it was a movie about Indigenous People from Australia. I looked it up, borrowed it from the library and was horrified at the story of the Government taking away children to be raised as “White” in church/state run schools. After some more research, we discovered that this was not an isolated event. Many first world countries including Canada did this. On a similar note, in Ireland there was the Magdalene Laundries where girls and young women deemed to be not normal, were forced into working and adapting to the Catholic faith. This was faithfully shown in the movie “The Magdalene Sisters”. Not only was this an Aboriginal issue, it was a children’s issue, and a human rights issue.
We thought this would be a compelling story, one which needed to be brought to the forefront of knowledge so that it would never happen again.

The Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund (DWF)

Due to the subject matter of our Rock Opera, we felt it appropriate and necessary to donate a portion of our music sales to the Downie Wenjack Fund (DWF).

“The Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund (DWF) is part of Gord Downie’s legacy and embodies his commitment, and that of both the Downie and Wenjack families, to call Canadians to learning and action in solidarity with Indigenous peoples of this land. The goal of the fund is to continue the conversation that began with Chanie Wenjack’s residential school story, and to support the reconciliation process through awareness, education, and action”.

Half Life

Wilton Said...

The music on the most recent release "Half Life" could be considered by some as Art Rock. Others may call it simply Alternative while others may hear it as Math Rock or Indie Rock. I guess one could say it's all of those things making for an unusual and interesting musical soundscape.

The Butterfly Plague

Wilton Said...

This album was a was a very important statement both lyrically and musically, at least to myself, that I had to make. The music was my first attempt at writing a rock opera influenced by my new love of Andrew Lloyd Webbers "Jesus Christ Superstar", hence why so much of it has recurring themes. In the end the lyrical idea for the rock opera was abandoned and I decided to look elsewhere for lyrical inspiration.
The lyrics stemmed from a variety of places such as the Timothy Finnley book The Butterfly Plague, the so called reality talk shows which proliferated T.V. (Geraldo), a recent break-up with a girl friend who wasn't really right for me and vice versa, and my own inner demons. The event which set this whole lyrical inspiration in motion was the 1996 film "The Long Kiss Goodnight" which featured Geena Davis and Samuel L. Jackson.
It wasn't until I had a more solid line up of musicians that I decided to record the whole thing which was done during the Fall and Winter of 2003/2004 with the release being in the Spring of 2004. In addition to myself on Vocals and Keys, the original recording features Chris Reid on guitar, Richard Rizzo on drums and Andrew Buntain on bass.

Broken

Wilton Said...

This album was a milestone in relation to my vocals. I had been taking some additional vocal coaching since the previous release (World up my Ass) and developed a stronger style. In addition, this release features a more streamlined style of writing of verse/chorus etc. However, I was still able to throw in some interesting tid bits which hopefully kept the music out of the pop realm.

World up my Ass - (download edit version)

Wilton Said...

Originally a cassette released in 1998 and then re released as a CD in 1999. This download version is an edited version of the original featuring what I believe are the best tracks and the ones we still play live.

There's a quite a varity of music going on here from the textural intro of "Star", the sleezy "In my Dreams", the acoustic based "Sin", the jazzy "Whipped Cream" and the epic "No Other Way".
